Surging Sparks Chase Cards: What's Still Worth Grading

Surging Sparks (SV08) came out on November 8, 2024 with 231 cards: 191 in the main set plus 40 secret rares. Almost two years on, the Pikachu ex Special Illustration Rare sells for $285.31 raw and Latias ex for $185.89, and everything else in the set falls off a cliff below $120. This guide prices the chase list from our catalog as of October 1, 2026 and says which of these cards still justify a grading fee.

Surging Sparks Raw Prices on October 1, 2026

The top two cards are worth a grading conversation, Milotic ex is a maybe, and nothing from Hydreigon ex down pays for a submission on its own. Prices below are TCGplayer market prices from the ZeroPop catalog, pulled October 1, 2026.

Card Rarity Raw market Grading call
Pikachu ex 238/191 Special Illustration Rare $285.31 Grade if centering is clean
Latias ex 239/191 Special Illustration Rare $185.89 Best candidate in the set
Milotic ex 237/191 Special Illustration Rare $118.46 Only with a pack-fresh copy
Pikachu ex 247/191 Gold Hyper Rare $79.96 Marginal
Hydreigon ex 240/191 Special Illustration Rare $36.80 Skip
Alolan Exeggutor ex 242/191 Special Illustration Rare $26.28 Skip unless it is a bulk batch

We did not pull PSA 10 sale prices for this refresh, so the grading column is a call on raw price against fee, not a quoted graded comp. Check recent sold listings for your exact card before you pay. Current fees are in our PSA grading cost breakdown.

Pikachu ex 238/191: Still the Face of the Set

The Pikachu ex SIR is the most valuable card in Surging Sparks at $285.31 raw, more than three times the Gold Hyper Rare Pikachu ex at $79.96. It is also the card where a grading fee hurts least, because the fee is a small slice of the raw price.

The risk is centering. Special Illustration Rares run the art to the edge with almost no border, so a slightly off print shows up as a miss under a tight centering tolerance. Scan front and back first. A copy that centers cleanly is worth submitting. One that does not belongs in a sleeve, since the fee eats into a raw price you could still sell.

Latias ex 239/191: The Cleanest Grading Case

At $185.89 raw, Latias ex has the best ratio of card value to grading fee among the six chases above. Pale backgrounds show fingerprint oil and scuffs faster than dark ones, so handle a raw copy by the edges and check the surface under angled light before you scan it.

Milotic ex, and the Gold Pikachu

Milotic ex 237/191 sits at $118.46, which is real money but leaves less room than Latias. The Gold Hyper Rare Pikachu ex 247/191 at $79.96 is the card to be careful with: gold foil is notorious for surface lines and edge nicks, and at that price a single grade miss leaves you under water after the fee.

Alolan Exeggutor ex 242/191: Skip the Fee

The August version of this post got this card wrong. It listed Alolan Exeggutor ex 242/191 at at roughly $40 raw with a "best multiple in the set" verdict. The catalog now shows $26.28, and a card worth $26.28 cannot absorb a grading fee, shipping and a possible 9 without ending up behind. It is a binder card. Hydreigon ex at $36.80 gets the same verdict.

What Decides a Surging Sparks Grade

Every SIR in this set is full art, so the same four axes decide the result: centering first, then corners (art runs right to the edge, so whitening shows immediately), surface (light backgrounds like Latias show handling), and edges. A card that spent two years loose in a binder pocket is more likely to show edge wear than one that went straight into a sleeve. Our community scans of these cards show up at 9.5 often enough that a clean copy is not exotic, but a scan before you submit is cheaper than finding out at PSA.

Should You Buy a Booster Box Now

Buy the single, not the box. The headline SIRs are all identified and priced, so a sealed box carries no discovery premium, and chasing a $285.31 Pikachu through packs when you can buy it directly is the worse use of money. If you want the set's cheaper picks, Latios 203/191 is at $32.55 and Pikachu ex 219/191 at $28.16 as of October 1.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Surging Sparks still worth grading in 2026?

Only for the top end. At raw prices of $285.31 for Pikachu ex 238/191 and $185.89 for Latias ex 239/191, a fee is a modest share of the card's value. Below $40 raw, as with Hydreigon ex at $36.80, it is not.

What is the most valuable card in Surging Sparks?

The Pikachu ex Special Illustration Rare, 238/191, at $285.31 raw on October 1, 2026. The Gold Hyper Rare Pikachu ex 247/191 is a distant $79.96.

How many cards are in Surging Sparks?

231, per Serebii: 191 main set cards and 40 secret rares. It released on November 8, 2024.

Why did the Alolan Exeggutor ex price drop?

Our catalog shows $26.28 for the 242/191 SIR today, down from roughly $40 when we first covered it in August. We did not track the cause. Treat any card in this price band as a collection piece rather than a grading play.

Should I buy a Surging Sparks booster box?

Not for the chase cards. With Pikachu ex 238/191 at $285.31 as a single, buying the card you want beats hoping a box delivers it.

What should I check before submitting a Surging Sparks card?

Centering on the full-art SIRs first, then corner whitening, then surface on pale cards like Latias. Scan front and back, and compare the card's raw price to your fee before you commit.
