Paldea Evolved Chase Cards: Is the $339 Magikarp Worth Grading?
Paldea Evolved (SV02) is the English Scarlet & Violet set that released on June 9, 2023, and one card carries it: the Magikarp illustration rare, 203/193, sells for $339.44 raw in our catalog on October 21, 2026. The next most valuable card is Maushold at $83.71. After that the set falls off a cliff, and that shape decides what is worth a grading fee.
Paldea Evolved Raw Prices on October 21, 2026
Magikarp is worth four times the second card and more than the next five combined ($83.71 + $52.15 + $51.55 + $47.21 + $41.91 = $276.53). These are TCGplayer market prices from the ZeroPop catalog, pulled October 21, 2026, for cards that have a published page.

The Magikarp Illustration Rare: Why One Card Holds the Set
Magikarp 203/193 is a $339.44 card because collectors treat it as the best Magikarp ever printed, and nothing else in the set competes with it for that reason. For scale, our catalog prices the Base Set Magikarp at $2.86 and the XY promo at $87.77.

The grading story is centering. We pulled the 20 Magikarp 203 scans in our public feed on October 21: one graded 10, ten graded 9.5, nine graded 9. Of the ten 9.5 cards, seven carried a centering subgrade of 9, and the card was held back by that one axis. The corners, edges and surface subgrades were 9.5 on those. The full-bleed art has no border to anchor the eye, so a card that looks fine in hand reads off-center once it is measured. Run it through a scan and check the centering number before you pay anything. Our centering explainer covers how that axis is scored.
Verdict: grade it if the scan comes back with centering at 9.5 or better. Hold a centering-9 copy raw unless you plan to cross it later.

The Rest of the Illustration Rares
Maushold at $83.71 is the only other card with real spread over the field. It is a nest of mice under a mushroom, and it earns its price from the art.

Marill is $52.15.

Both are modern holo illustration rares with dark, busy art, which hides small surface marks but not corner whitening on the silver border. That border is where our scans find the defects.
The starter lines are the cheapest lesson in the set. Fuecoco 201/193 is $41.91 and Crocalor 202/193 is $15.79, but the final evolution, Skeledirge ex, is $1.01 in its regular version. The art sets the price here, and the battle role does not.
The Special Illustration Rares: Tinkaton ex and Iono
Tinkaton ex 262/193 is $51.55 and Iono 269/193 is $47.21, which puts both within $5 of Marill and nowhere near Magikarp.

The textured foil on Tinkaton is easy to scratch in sleeving, and the glare in a photo can fake a surface flaw, so check it under angled light before trusting any single read. Iono sits $4 below Tinkaton at $47.21.
Which Paldea Evolved Cards Are Worth Grading?
Only Magikarp clears a grading fee comfortably, and only as a 9.5 or better. Everything else in the table sits between $15 and $84 raw, where a grading fee plus shipping eats most or all of the gain from a 9.5. We cover current fees in our PSA grading cost guide, and the same break-even math is in Pokemon cards worth grading.
Skip list: Chien-Pao ex, one of the set's named headline cards, is $0.90 raw in our catalog. Fuecoco, Baxcalibur and Frigibax are fun to pull and not worth submitting. Other Scarlet & Violet sets are covered in our Obsidian Flames and Paradox Rift guides.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most valuable card in Paldea Evolved?
Magikarp 203/193, the illustration rare, at $339.44 raw on October 21, 2026 in our catalog. Maushold 226/193 is second at $83.71.
When did Paldea Evolved release?
June 9, 2023, worldwide. The set lists 279 cards in total, 193 of them in the numbered main set.
Is the Paldea Evolved Magikarp worth grading?
Usually yes, if the copy scans at 9.5 or better on centering. In 20 scans from our feed, only one reached a 10, and seven of the ten 9.5 cards were held back by a centering subgrade of 9.
Why is the Magikarp so much more than the rest of the set?
Because collectors rank it as the definitive Magikarp, and no other Paldea Evolved card has that pull. The gap is stark: the next five cards after it total $276.53, below Magikarp's $339.44 alone.
Are the Paldea Evolved starter illustration rares worth anything?
Fuecoco is $41.91 and Crocalor is $15.79, so they are pull-and-keep cards. Neither covers a grading fee on its own.
Should I grade Tinkaton ex or Iono?
Not at about $50 each. A 9.5 might not beat the raw price by enough to pay for grading, so scan first and submit only a copy that looks like a 10.
